INSURANCE CLAIMS

HOW TO AVOID THE MOST COMMON INSURANCE CLAIMS

Floridians pay the highest amount for home owners insurance, about $3,575 on a $200,000 policy that has a $1,000 deductible, according to the Insurance Information Institute. That is about double what the average American pays in other states.
No one wants to experience home or property damage, we understand how having to file a claim can be upsetting and disruptive to your life. Unfortunately, around 1 out of 15 homeowners with insurance policies has to file a claim each year

Some of the most common and costly natural disasters happen here in Florida including damage from thunderstorms, winds from hurricanes, sinkholes, and tornados. In 2016 the insured losses from natural disasters was $23.8 billion. As of January 4, 2017 the top natural catastrophes were severe thunderstorms, winter storms, floods, earthquakes, cyclone, fire. The most common types of claims can often be prevented by taking a few easy steps. Preventative measures may take some work and expense but will save you money in the long run.

Protecting Your Roof Wind Damage

Anywhere that wind can get into home can be reinforced to prevent damage from hurricane force winds. A roof that looks like an A is more likely to suffer damage then a barreled roof. A roof that is not reinforced is more likely to collapse. Hurricane straps can also be added to your roof to hold it to the walls.
Protecting your home from Sinkholes
If you notice any sinkhole activity in your neighborhood immediately call a foundation expert to inspect your property. If they find sinkhole activity contact an insurance adjuster to represent you and file a claim with the insurance company. The foundation can be stabilized with void filling and compacting grouting.

Protecting your home from Floods

If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, make sure to purchase flood insurance. Flooding insurance is not included in your normal home insurance in most states. Make sure to repair and clear your driveways, decks, and drains. Landscaping should be done to minimize the possibility of flooding and the land should be graded to avoid water pooling near your home. Storm drains should be routinely cleared, especially before rainy season.

Protecting your home from Fire

Please always make sure to check your fire alarms and have a working fire extinguisher to prevent fires. Always stay by frying and boiling food to avoid kitchen fires. Heaters should be routinely inspected, and space heaters should be given room from furniture.
